World-class Designer School is a college-level, tuition-free, design school with a peer-to-peer learning environment.

What do we do?

We recruit and prepare young and talented African designers with the aim of gaining cultured experience and expertise in digital product design for the international market, but also to focus on local needs.

How does it work?

We use peer learning - In this model, students interact with one another to achieve educational goals alongside guidance from mentors from the best technology and design companies in the world.

Who is this for?

For English speaking African designers from and in Africa older than 18 and younger than 35. Design background is necessary but not mandatory. The school program is free but with reserved right to admission.

When will it start?

The first cohort of the World-class Designer school will start in the second half of the year. More detailed information will be shared by the WCD team soon. Subscribe to the mail list to be the first to know.


There are no pre-admission requirements such as grades, recommendations, transcripts, etc. Any English speaking African, 18+ can apply.


The school is for African designers or of African descent living in or outside Africa. The whole program is remote.


The X-Factor Test is part of the admissions process. Students have to pass it to apply to the full World-class Designer program.

The admission process to the wcd school consist of 2 steps


Candidates have to fill a form with basic personal information. The process takes less than 5 minutes. After full completion, the WCD School team reaches out to candidates with instructions to submit their x-factor test.


On the x-factor test selected candidates will be asked to identify a problem and present a proposal (solution) to the problem using design. The proposal can be in any format. There are no rules, so candidates are free to use their creativity.

Does WCD School stake an intellectual property rights claim for any design that I produce while in the training facility?

No. WCD School grants to all of its students the right of full-ownership for all designs created.

Do we have to sign some kind of contract at the beginning of the school, where you are going to ask us for money in 5 years?

No. WCD School is free-of-charge before, during and after you study here. there are no hidden tuition fees.

What is the “X-factor” selection criteria?

In a successful candidate, we are looking for these general criteria.

  • How they analyze the problem and the problem area, and how they gather more information through research.
  • How they understand, and frame the problem direction, and explore the challenge.
  • How they come up with the initial idea for solution, and how they gather feedback to improve / refine it.
  • How they can communicate your design choices to explain your design process.

The submission will not be judged on visual presentation. However, creative and out-of-the box thinking is encouraged.

What kind of courses does WCD School offer?

WCD curriculum consists of a mix of various MOOCs content, mentorship sessions and real-world problems challenges.

After the X-factor, how many hours should I expect to come to study?

We recommend dedicating at least 3 hours everyday (15-20 hours per week). Organize your schedule for your own efficiency and benefit.

How can WCD School be tuition-free?

WCD School is free thanks to the financial support of the WCD Conference.

How do I know if I have been admitted to WCD School after the X-factor?

After completing the X-factor, you will be informed of your admissions status by email within 15 days.

Do I have to know design to join WCD School?

No, not at all! it is not necessary to have any knowledge in design to join and succeed at WCD School.

What types of jobs could WCD School students eventually apply for?

Students who have participated in the WCD School program can apply to any job in the field of digital design as UX/UI, Product Design, Interaction Design and Product Management

Does WCD School deliver a bachelor’s degree or another type of diploma?

WCD School does not grant degrees or diplomas. Our program is based on levels of experience that you earn with a project. We deliver a certificate of completion at the end of our program. The experience and skills that you acquire while studying at WCD School are essential for portfolio reviews.

What are the age requirements for attending WCD School?
